Welcome to the homepage of the organ department of Western Connecticut State University!
We would like to take this opportunity to tell you about our organ class and activities:
St. Sulpice case as seen from the Tribune below, France 2008.
LOCATION - WCSU is located about an hour away from New York, New Haven, and Hartford, and within driving distance of Boston, Philadelphia, and other northeastern cities. Located in the town of Danbury, Connecticut, the home of composer, Charles Ives, WCSU has a friendly atmosphere typical of New England's small colleges. Our proximity to major cultural centers enables our students to hear great performances and participate in master classes with outstanding musicians.
FACULTY - Most of the WCSU music faculty members are active in the New York professional music scene. Our organ professor, Stephen Roberts, is an experienced teacher and performer who has taught many fine students.
AFFORDABILITY - WCSU is one of the universities of the Connecticut State University system. Our reasonable cost, financial aid, and excellent employment opportunities make it possible for most of our organ students to graduate without debt in the form of student loans.
FACILITIES - The state of Connecticut has just released funds for the design phase of our new $97,000,000 Center for the Arts, which is slated for completion in 2013. The new building will include a new concert hall with a pipe organ. In addition the present mechanical action studio organ and practice pipe organ will be moved to the new building. The present music building is White Hall, located on the Midtown Campus. Click here to see more.
EUROPEAN STUDY TOURS - The WCSU organ class is the only organ program in the USA that takes annual study tours to Europe to play historic pipe organs and have master classes with some of Europe's most distinguished organists. Click here to see some photos of our most recent study tour.
COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH - At WCSU there is no artificial boundary between classical and popular music. Students are able to take classes in all areas of music. WCSU's jazz department is nationally recognized, and the annual WCSU Jazz Festival attracts an enthusiastic audience.
DIVERSITY - WCSU welcomes students from all racial, ethnic, socio-economic, and other backgrounds. Prospective transfer students from other institutitions are invited to contact us.
OPPORTUNITIES - Well paying internships are available for WCSU organ students. In addition there are many performance opportunities, both on campus and in the area. Salaries in the area are high, and there are usually positions available. Our organ students have won a number of competitions, and they consistently go on to study at the country's best graduate schools. One of our students recently received a Fulbright grant to study in France.
DEGREES OFFERED - Bachelor of Music in organ, Bachelor of Science in music education, Bachelor of Arts with organ emphasis, Master of Science in music education. Click here for more information.
